What is Before/After?

An ad format showing the transformation a product delivers. Left panel shows the problem state, right panel shows the result. One of the highest-converting ad formats for results-based products.

In mani: Mani generates before/after split-screen ads from your product photos.

Why before/after converts

Before/after ads work because they demonstrate transformation visually. The viewer instantly understands the value proposition without reading copy. The format triggers an emotional response: "I want to go from the left panel to the right panel." Before/after ads consistently rank in the top 3 converting formats for skincare (3.2x average CTR), fitness (2.8x), home improvement (2.5x), and any product with a visible result.

Structuring the split

Left panel: the problem state. Use slightly desaturated colors, less flattering lighting, or a "messy" composition. Right panel: the result state. Use vibrant colors, better lighting, and a clean composition. The contrast should be visible at thumbnail size (150x150 pixels) because most viewers see the ad small before deciding to engage. Label each side clearly: "Before" and "After" or "Day 1" and "Day 30."

Platform-specific before/after formats

Meta feed: side-by-side static image (1:1 or 4:5). Instagram Stories: swipe to reveal (9:16). TikTok: video transition with a hand swipe or snap cut. Carousel: first card is before, second card is after, remaining cards show the product and social proof. Each platform has a native interaction pattern that makes the before/after reveal feel organic rather than forced.

Legal considerations

Some platforms restrict before/after ads in health, beauty, and fitness categories. Meta requires that before/after images be realistic and not digitally altered to exaggerate results. TikTok restricts weight loss before/after content. Always use real results from real customers with permission. AI-generated before/after scenes should represent achievable outcomes, not fabricated transformations.
